Summer 2019 Research Team

Danika Wagner is currently enrolled in the Adult Clinical Psychology program at York University. She holds a BA (Honours) in Philosophy and Mathematics from Dalhousie University and a BA (Honours) in Psychology from York University. She is interested in understanding how we feel influences our preferences for activities. Specifically, her research focuses on the experience of mental effort and how it relates to the avoidance of effortful tasks, particularly among populations with ADHD. By connecting the experience of mental effort to lab-based measures of effort preferences, she hopes to further our understanding of attention and task engagement in clinical and non-clinical populations. She joined Anne MacLennan’s research team in September 2018, and she was working on the Interviews and transcriptions for the Programming, practices, production, and policy: Canadian community radio project.

 

Wanqiao Chen was a third-year undergraduate student at Communication University of China majoring in radio, television directing, and editing. She was selected for a Mitacs Globalink Research Internship from thousands of competitive candidates from all over the world and appointed as a research assistant for our project. She was working on the Interviews and transcriptions for the Programming, practices, production, and policy: Canadian community radio project. Her research interests are in television and radio, art education, and variety shows.

 

Jie Wang was a third-year student in the Journalism School of Fudan University. She has completed research aimed at teasing out the origins of the famine between 1958 and 1961 in China and presenting the process of the penetration into northeast in the eyes of witnesses. She is planning to pursue a career in marketing or education. She joined the Community Radio project in June 2019 and was working as a Research Assistant for Professor Anne MacLennan for 3 months. She was working on the Interviews and transcriptions for the Programming, practices, production, and policy: Canadian community radio project.

 

Vanessa Sandoval was a fourth-year undergraduate student in York's Film Production program, minoring with a BA Honours History degree. After the completion of her BFA and BA in the Fall of 2019, she intends to pursue Canadian television network and digital content screenwriting and directing. Specifically, she is interested in the sociopolitical realm of grey surrounding Canada's multi-culturalism through the mediums of animation and live-action. She joined Anne MacLennan's team as a Research Assistant in July of 2017, and was working on the Interviews and transcriptions for the Programming, practices, production, and policy: Canadian community radio project.

 

Ruthann Bromfield was in her final year of Communications Studies at York University. She is planning to pursue a career in marketing, advertising, and creative writing. Ruthann is very passionate about telling stories and is an avid consumer of TV shows and movies from a variety of genres. She was working on completing her first graphic novel in hopes of having it published in time for graduation.  She was working on the Interviews and transcriptions for the Programming, practices, production, and policy: Canadian community radio project.

 

 

Ryan Boileau was a second year honours communications studies student in the Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University. His interests include politics, culture, and communication structures. He joined the program in May of 2019 and was working on the Interviews and transcriptions for the Programming, practices, production, and policy: Canadian community radio project.

 

 

Laraib Ahmed was a fourth-year Health Management student at York University. Her research interests include Mental Health in South Asian communities and Cultural Studies. She aims to pursue a master degree in Health Informatics in the near future. Her hobbies include hiking, biking and camping. She joined Anne MacLennan's research team in May 2019, and was working on the Interviews and transcriptions for the Programming, practices, production, and policy: Canadian community radio project

 

 

 

Elizabeth Mendoza was in her final year of the iBA Communication Studies program at York University. She completed a semester abroad in South Korea at Korea University. After graduating, she hopes to a pursue a career in Advertising and Marketing, while also trying to pursue a career in acting. Her interests include film, television, photography, music, dance, and theatre. She joined Anne MacLennan's research team in May 2019 and was working on the Interviews and transcriptions for the Programming, practices, production, and policy: Canadian community radio project

 

 

Judy Szczytynski was a fourth year undergraduate student completing an Honours degree in Communication Studies accompanied by a Minor in Human Resources Management. She was assisting Anne MacLennan’s Community Radio research team for the Summer 2019 term and was working on the Interviews and transcriptions for the Programming, practices, production, and policy: Canadian community radio project. As she approaches graduation, Judy is looking forward to working in: Marketing, Recruitment, and/or Public Relations.

 

 

Sharlène Clarke was a second year bilingual (French and English) undergraduate student in the Communications department at Glendon College (York’s bilingual campus). Upon completing her bachelor’s degree, she plans on going to graduate school. Sharlène joined the team November 2019 and was working on the Interviews and transcriptions for the Programming, practices, production, and policy: Canadian community radio project.

Jessica Ireland was a master's student in the Political Science program at York University. She is the 2019 recipient of the Packer Award for Social Justice and the Dean's Award for Research Excellence. She graduated summa cum laude from the Bachelor of Arts program in Political Science at York University in June 2019. Jessica joined Anne MacLennan’s research team in November 2017, and she was working on the Interviews and transcriptions for the Programming, practices, production, and policy: Canadian community radio project.

 

 

Winnifred Kumi was first-year undergraduate student in the program of Biomedical Science at York University. She was part of the ACE program which presents student with the opportunity to earn $5000 in scholarships from York University to pursue her studies. She aspires to complete her graduate studies leading to become an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN). She joined the program in October 2018 and was working on the Interviews and transcriptions for the Programming, practices, production, and policy: Canadian community radio project
